Lorenzo Stefano Iannizzotto

Bio

Lorenzo Stefano Iannizzotto (Catania, 1994) is architect, PhD student and researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte (Lisbon) and University of Florence, with FCT funded research "THE CARTOGRAPHY OF THE IN-BETWEEN: Rethinking Urban Voids Approach for New Urban Challenges" and PhD visiting scholar at University of Westminster. His master’s degree thesis with the title “Construir Entre” was published in 2023. He worked as architect at Ventura Trindade Arquitectos (Lisbon) and in 2022 in the research project “SizaATLAS. Filling the Gaps for World Heritage”. He participated in several international conferences and workshops, he co-organised the Erasmus BIP Workshop in 2025 “Activating the Void”. In 2025, his work “Immaterial Matters” was selected for the 7th Lisbon Triennale “How Heavy Is a City?”. He is part of the Management Committee and a Working Group Leader of the COST Action CA24134 - Observatory of Innovative Strategies for Repurposing Terrain Vague (OBSERVISTA), and of the Coordination Team of AESOP - Young Academics.

Abstract

The contemporary city is subjected to profound processes of transformation that are radically changing its structure, generating within itself and at the borders new types of spaces that are difficult to interpret and define. Among these spaces there are the Terrain Vague, undeveloped spaces within urban areas, at different scales, where emptiness prevails over fullness and naturalness prevails over built, with unclear boundaries or thresholds.

Even if underused, ambiguous, abandoned, these spaces are a precious resource for the future of the city with a great potential. It seems necessary to develop a new approach and an open, generic and replicable methodology for these spaces: a more flexible, dynamic and reversible approach focused on urban relations systems and collaborative practices.

The creation of two atlas of Lisbon urban void is proposed: atlas of the past, which studies the history and evolution of them; atlas of the future, experimental, interactive and collaborative. Finally, the value of these spaces and their role in the city of the future will be studied.
